HOUSTON, TEXAS, March 29, 2023 – Today, Chemex Global announced that it earned a national Excellence in Construction Pyramid Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for its work on Encina Development Group, LLC’s Demonstration Unit Project in San Antonio, Texas. The award was presented at the ABC Convention 2023 in Orlando, Florida, on March 16. The EIC awards, presented to 82 of the nation’s top construction projects in 2022, are the industry’s leading national competition that honors general and specialty contractors for world-class, safe, and innovative construction projects nationwide.
“We are enormously proud of our team for being recognized with the Excellence in Construction Pyramid Award, which reinforces their hard work and dedication to the Encina Demonstration Unit Project,” said Chemex Global President and CEO Doran Oancia. “This win is a testament to our deep modularization experience and world-class engineering capabilities, further solidifying our standing as leaders in energy transition projects.”
“Encina is excited to be celebrating this momentous occasion with Chemex Global,” said Shirley Hammond, Encina Vice President of Engineering. “The partnership with Chemex has proven to be mutually beneficial. We are delighted to share the news that this project has already received an award, a clear validation of the exceptional work and dedication of both teams.”
Chemex Global was awarded an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract by Encina to implement its proprietary catalytic conversion technology to transform end-of-life plastics back into drop-in circular chemicals. Chemex performed all engineering, design, procurement, piping and structural fabrication (utilizing parent company Shaw’s world-class pipe and module fabrication), assembly, painting, insulating, heat tracing, electrical work, panels, junction boxes, PCL/HMI programming, construction and commissioning of the unit. The unit produced the world’s first aromatic products made directly from post-consumer mixed plastics at this scale.
“The Excellence in Construction Awards are the cornerstone competition in our industry, honoring projects like the Encina Pilot Plant Project because the work by the team at Chemex Global exemplifies the best of the best in construction,” said 2023 National Chair of the ABC Board of Directors Milton Graugnard, executive vice president, Cajun Industries LLC, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “This world-class construction project shows the diversity of what the merit shop construction industry builds and how we build projects safely, on time and on budget. It is an honor to congratulate Chemex Global for showcasing construction excellence.”
The EIC Awards honor every member of the construction team, including the contractor, owner, architect/designer and engineer. The winning projects are judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, innovation and safety.
A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year’s judges included representatives from At Home, the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, Marriott, the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Building Sciences, T-Mobile, the University Research Institute and various construction-related firms nationwide.
